3/ Four micro-states: Andorra ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฉ, Monaco ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡จ, San Marino ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฒ, and the Vatican ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฆ are not members of the European Union ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ, but have signed monetary agreements with the EU, allowing them to not only use the Euro as their currency but also to mint Euro coins.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_status_and_usage_of_the_euro#Sovereign_states

The other European micro-state, Liechtenstein ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ is in a curency untion with neighboring Switzerland ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ, and uses the Swiss Franc

5/ You may be surprised to learn that there is a British ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง territory where the Euro is the official currency - the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, a British Overseas Territory on the Island of Cyprus.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akrotiri_and_Dhekelia

The de facto state of Northern Cyprus uses the ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท Turkish Lira.

The other Mediterranean British Overseas Territory - Gibraltar ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฎ uses the pound (officially the Gibraltar pound, 1 to 1 convertible with British pound)

8/ The Euro is not just a European currency - as the map on Euro notes shows it is used in the Americas in French Guyana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ, in the Caribbean in St. Barts ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฑ, Guadeloupe ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ต, Martinique ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ถ, and St. Martin, and in Saint Pierre and Miquelon ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฒ. It is also used in the Indian Ocean in Rรฉunion ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ช and Mayotte ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‡น

The ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Dutch Caribbean territories do not use the Euro and Curaรงao ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ผ and Sint Maarten ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฝ started using a new currency, the Caribbean guilder, in 2025.

2/ The Euro was introduced as a physical currency on 1 Jan 2002, originally in just 12 EU countries:

Since then, as the European Union ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ has expanded, so too has the Eurozone. The Euro as adopted by Slovenia ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ (2007), Cyprus ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พ, Malta ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น (08), Slovakia๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ (09), Estonia ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช (11), Latvia ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ป (14), Lithuania ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡น (15), Croatia ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท (23), and now also Bulgaria ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฌ (26)

9/ Another complexity of the Eurozone is enclaves / exclaves

For example in Campione d'Italia the Italian ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น enclave in Switzerland ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญThe Euro is the offical currency but salaries are typically paid in Swiss Francs

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campione_d%27Italia

Similarly in the German ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช exclave of Bรผsingen am Hochrhein the Swiss Franc is also widely used.

@opencage Before adopting the Euro, Kosovo used Germany's currency, the Deutsche Mark. So they basically followed Germany's adoption of the Euro. (I just think that this fact is interesting in its own right.)
