Don’t listen to the science deniers: measles is not a trivial disease if you’re 5 or 55 and we can no longer rely on herd immunity.
@overholt Yep. As a general precaution, I took a vaccination for measles before a US trip late last year. When I told the doc I didn't have my childhood vax records, he said immunity would have faded by now anyway.

@overholt I got titres done this year and was relieved to find out I still have full immunity. It was nice, they did the “nursing student” panel. Apparently that’s the easiest way to frame it

@BinChicken Covid19 variant Omicron has also depleted immunity in people who have been infected by it, and consequent subvariants. #WearAMask @overholt

@overholt I had measles about 1982 and recently got tested for antibodies for a job - immunity confirmed

@Kpasa @Mab_813 @overholt @geolaw rare but possible yes. Wouldn't take the chance. Wish I'd been able to have the vaccine as a child, instead I have a bunch of pox scars and live in fear of shingles, which just took out my friend of same age (late 30s/early 40s) for weeks on end.
Yay vaccines. #vaccinesWork
@noodlemaz @Kpasa @overholt @geolaw
I was luckier with my shingles case but couldn't wear trousers for weeks. Had planned on getting vaccinated but in my country the shingles vaccine is recommended from age 60 and authorized from age 50, so I thought, well I'll get it when I get to that age...

@overholt I'm fifty, and came to the same conclusion. I tested my titers and had zero immunity to measles, despite having decent immunity for rubella. So another booster was in order.

@overholt This is a really important PSA! When I was getting ready to go to college in the late '80s they were systematically requiring a re-up of the measles vaccination due to the exact concern you mention. As a know it all teenager at the time, I was annoyed. But in the last several years, I've been grateful for that proactive requirement - made by the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda MD, which has since been merged with Walther Reed Army Medical Center.
@elkwisdom @overholt they did the same when I went to college in the early 90s, so I think I had an "extra" beyond what was standard at the time (meaning 3 total) but yet I still had no immunity when I tested a few months ago. It's worth testing again to check.

@overholt I had rubella as a child despite being vaccinated for it at the time. Unfortunately I suspect this means I get less protection from vaccines (especially since I'm also on immunosuppressant meds now ) but should do it anyway.

@callunavulgaris @overholt I got measles vaccination at Boots just a few weeks ago, cost was about 30 pounds I think.
@callunavulgaris @overholt I looked at my records and the MMR was 45 pounds per shot, but I needed 2 shots with a month in between, so it was 90 pounds in total.
The service at Boots was generally quite good; you book online and they were competent and friendly. I got various other vaccinations (tick borne encephalitis, DTP and others) there and that was all good.

@overholt @BlackAzizAnansi I'd recommend anyone that age or older get tested to see if they are immune...or just get a new MMR. I had one ten years ago, but I was no longer immune.
-
@BinChicken Indeed.

@BinChicken Omicron is Mild, they kept bleating. They were soooo wrong. It evades the immune system. @overholt

waning immunity, Me too.
No test available so I started a booster program, that means not just measles were on the list.
Very Important Covid as the partial immunity wanes within a few months.

@overholt This is really interesting. I'm wondering if anyone who's replied is in the UK? We can't just request vaccines on the NHS, for example I wasn't eligible for a free flu jab this year, but this is something I could look into getting done privately, esp as I have a health plan through work instead of a pay rise

@callunavulgaris @overholt In the UK, and we got MMRs about a year ago. We pointed out that we were going to be visiting the US, and managed to persuade them that that was sufficient cause

@callunavulgaris @overholt We also pointed out that we were pre-MMR, having had the actual measles disease before that vaccine came along, and had no desire to repeat the infection now
(I also have no desire to repeat shingles - most unpleasant)

@overholt thanks for posting. Getting checked for immunity is so important no matter how annoyed the doctor is. I'm in the group before the vaccine that should have had measles, but my mom said I never had it, even though my brothers did. That makes no sense, but I insisted to get checked anyway, and did have measles as a kid. But measles in adults is bad, bad, bad..

I’m wondering if ever having had Covid could wipe out prior immunity.

@overholt In the UK here: I *had* measles, as a child (sometime in the late 1950s/early 60s); I've never had mumps; and I got the first iteration of the Rubella vaccine. So last year I asked my GP if I could have the MMR, and got it! (Also flu, shingles, and covid vaccinations...) Better safe than sorry, and (so far
) I've never had a bad reaction to a vaccine, apart from a slightly sore arm!
