PSA: I’m turning 55 next month, and there’s an issue with people who got vaccinated for measles around the same time I did as a kid having waning immunity. I got tested and it turned out I had no immunity, so I got revaccinated this week. Don’t listen to the science deniers: measles is not a trivial disease if you’re 5 or 55 and we can no longer rely on herd immunity.

@overholt Yes, Yay Science! I’m 71 and got another MMR booster last year after I found out I had no immunity to measles or rubella, but I had to really insist on a titer test with Kaiser since they required one. One local pharmacy said they would give (sell) me the vax if Kaiser wouldn’t give me one - and I was interested to read someone mention that these local pharmacy policies may have changed (wouldn't be surprised). I had no IDEA that a vax could “wear out” until in the course of Kaiser chasing down an alarming lab result (now resolved), I noticed that my Hep B vax no longer gave me immunity, so I demanded a new one and I immediately started to worry about the others, especially measles. Sure enough... My local extended family had terrible experiences with polio, rubella, and whooping cough back in the day, which of course I brought up for emphasis. So I’m glad that I acted fast and didn’t suffer much indecision/nagging fear, who needs more of that...

@overholt This is an excellent reminder, thankyou!

Somehow I assumed some vaccines need a booster every 10 or so years and other vaccines last for your entire lifetime. But, occasionally the protection they offer can wane over time. Imagine my surprise when a friend (who received the usual suite of vaccines as a young kid) was recently tested for immunity, and the result indicated they have little or no defence against measles. Naturally, they got a fresh vaccine immediately.

There's a disturbing amount of science-denial and anti-vax nonsense going around. Predictably, this is leading to a sharp rise in highly-infectious communicable diseases going around in the community. I can only encourage people to ask their doctor about getting tested, protect themselves, and to do your part to boost herd immunity because it's an easy way to be being caring and protective of other people.

@overholt I'm a few years younger than you. There was a serious outbreak of measles in the late '80s in the area where I grew up, so we all got an additional booster then.

@overholt I got tested at 35 and had no immunity anymore! FYI no one warned me about fever and general crud one week into vaccine application.

@marielgm @overholt a dose of Benadryl or similar 15 minutes before can help with symptoms and doesn't seem to impact intuition immunity.

@overholt Yep. As a general precaution, I took a vaccination for measles before a US trip late last year. When I told the doc I didn't have my childhood vax records, he said immunity would have faded by now anyway.

@overholt I got titres done this year and was relieved to find out I still have full immunity. It was nice, they did the “nursing student” panel. Apparently that’s the easiest way to frame it

@Kpasa @Mab_813 @overholt @geolaw rare but possible yes. Wouldn't take the chance. Wish I'd been able to have the vaccine as a child, instead I have a bunch of pox scars and live in fear of shingles, which just took out my friend of same age (late 30s/early 40s) for weeks on end.

I was luckier with my shingles case but couldn't wear trousers for weeks. Had planned on getting vaccinated but in my country the shingles vaccine is recommended from age 60 and authorized from age 50, so I thought, well I'll get it when I get to that age...

@overholt I'm fifty, and came to the same conclusion. I tested my titers and had zero immunity to measles, despite having decent immunity for rubella. So another booster was in order.

@overholt This is a really important PSA! When I was getting ready to go to college in the late '80s they were systematically requiring a re-up of the measles vaccination due to the exact concern you mention. As a know it all teenager at the time, I was annoyed. But in the last several years, I've been grateful for that proactive requirement - made by the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda MD, which has since been merged with Walther Reed Army Medical Center.

@elkwisdom @overholt they did the same when I went to college in the early 90s, so I think I had an "extra" beyond what was standard at the time (meaning 3 total) but yet I still had no immunity when I tested a few months ago. It's worth testing again to check.

@overholt I had rubella as a child despite being vaccinated for it at the time. Unfortunately I suspect this means I get less protection from vaccines (especially since I'm also on immunosuppressant meds now ) but should do it anyway. 😕

@callunavulgaris @overholt I looked at my records and the MMR was 45 pounds per shot, but I needed 2 shots with a month in between, so it was 90 pounds in total.

The service at Boots was generally quite good; you book online and they were competent and friendly. I got various other vaccinations (tick borne encephalitis, DTP and others) there and that was all good.

@overholt @BlackAzizAnansi I'd recommend anyone that age or older get tested to see if they are immune...or just get a new MMR. I had one ten years ago, but I was no longer immune.

@Tooden @overholt Yikes! That explains depleted immunity for vaccines we thought gave lifetime protection. Fuck COVID! 😞
