John Thomas Biggers. The Quilting Party, 1980.
This vast masterpiece of Afro-futurism is probably his 2nd-most-famous work, by theme anyway, if we block his many versions of the easier Shotgun Paintings as a group. Even before approaching Biggers as a Black American and painting Black history, experience and African myth, I am arrested by the mere fact of him having been cis-het male. His interrelational matriarchal home-craft worldview can feel so perspicaciously, awingly "female."
