Are you a #musician or #MusicProducer who uses #samples in their work, and uses sample packs (free or paid)? If, what kind/style of packs do you look for/like? Song building kits? Drum/percussion collections? Synth pads? Weird sound FX? LMK if you don't mind!

Self recorded stuff. Weird sounds and field recordings. Mangled and manipulated.

@etherdiver Field recordings, now that I've accepted that "samples" is widely interpreted to mean "snippets of other people's music."

I record some myself, but have also built up a collection drawn mostly from asoundeffect.com.

What kind of thing? Mechanical sounds, mostly. When I first heard the term "industrial music", I took it literally. I'm still smitten with the idea.

I used to always do sound design from scratch because I found working with samples tedious and difficult, but I've come to appreciate them over the past couple of months, especially with old Jungle sample packs, but also vocal synthesis and field recordings

Drum kits definitely. I usually want natural sounding drums. I wish I had a drum kit, but alas, I have to make do with sample packs.

Weird SFX are divided into two types - weird digital effects I try to play with synths to create my own. Weird recordings (bird chatter, ocean surf, explosions) I either go for samples, or I find a way to record them myself.

Regarding pads, do virtual instruments that are based on samples count? 🤔

@etherdiver If I need sound FX or background ambience, I often go to freesound.org. Sometimes I take odd moments from films that aren't music but have a musical feel to them. Everything else I make myself.

@etherdiver Honestly, I'm pretty omnivorous. Drum loops, individual hits, weird textures, long atmospheric sounds, field recordings, vocal samples, wavetables, multisamples, you name it, it's probably been in my music somewhere.

I will say that I have been using more multisamples lately, they tend to give me a really solid launching point with a lot of range. E.g. yesterday's jamuary techno track used a bunch of "from mars" multisamples of old soviet synths that I further mangled up.

@etherdiver Thinking on this more today, I guess I would add that the one thing I *don't* generally use is clips of other ppl's songs, as A) seems like a huge can of worms in terms of copyright, and B) While I can appreciate the work of artists who do this well, I'm looking for individual lego bricks, not fully built sets, if that metaphor makes sense.

@etherdiver i use drumsamples.. but i have mostly what i could ever utilize.
so from time to time i download vocals, specific noises from devices , animals or enviromental stuff. Freesound.org or ubuweb are great places for that

                          @etherdiver nice!

Personally I have all the drums and synths samples I could ever wish. So I mostly like sample packs that takes me somewhere new. Experimental tonal material, samples with a narrative (recorded here, tells this story) or with some kind of challenge.

Looking forward to see what you find out!

@etherdiver vocal drops of any kind, singing, chanting, talking, yelling. I'm very microphone-shy so if I want any sort of voice audible in my music, I usually have to sample it.

When it comes to things you might do with a synth specifically, transition sounds is something I have a lot of use for, and I basically don't think there is such a thing as too many drum samples.

One sample pack I use a lot is samples of a single note being held, recorded on tape and slowed down to half-speed. I use them along with an envelope to play melodies that has a bit of a vibey mellotron feel.

@etherdiver I very recently purchased a bunch of packs from ghosthack. What I liked is that everything is well organized and clearly labeled. It matters because it can save lots of time finding something based on the words and descriptions in the directories and subdirectories. And as someone else said, you can never have too many drum samples. "Interesting" sounds are always interesting too, because one can make new instruments using a sampler.
