@jollysea @grindcrank I came in when the O'Reilly book "The Whole Internet, User's Guide and Catalogue" just had its 2nd edition "now with WWW".

@cubeofcheese universities offered their staff (sometimes students) webspace, and because your home directory is marked with a tilde, it was also in the URL. This text has some interesting reflections on it:

(Personally I'm a geocities/angelfire, younger than the usenets but older than the myspaces.)

At least 3 very active FIDO-Net years before I typed WWW for the 1st time.
Since then, is Mastodon the 1st Social-Something I survived mentally for longer than a year.

@jollysea Colorful Background and GIFs in Mails, fancy fonts, overloaded yet simple Webpages, a few but iconic YouTube-Clips... Harmless and pretty Content.

@jollysea I could have picked the tildes and slow internet, but chose MySpace and blogs. My actual preference is between those two, when the DSL I had was fast, but before the corporate take over

@jollysea The first one, but just barely! When I first got Internet access, the WWW existed but it hadn’t really made it out of CERN yet, and it wasn’t anything I was aware of for about eight or nine more months.
