@signalapp Let's be serious here: you need urgently to publish somewhere (a blog post, here on Mastodon) about what's your plan in case something bad happens in the USA.
From "what if the government asks permanent access to Signal servers to store user metadata and encrypted messages (which they will surely store in the hope to decrypt later in case someone finds a way to do so)" to "what if the USA's government shut down the entire service". What's your plan? People need to know that. Things are escalating too fast for people to ignore.

@signalapp Signal IMO has bad security because when someone decides they are not interested in an overpriced, underperforming service of "phone number" and stops using their SIM, they cannot deregister the number from Signal and the new owner of the number either can hijack their Signal account, or people may be blocked from using newly purchased SIMs with Signal.
Also, authoritarian regimes IMO can temporarily transfer a number into a provider's internal SIM in order to hijack a Signal account and impersonate a dissident against another dissident, facilitating abduction, torture and murder.

@clock also, here's a simple problem i had to face. i lost access to my phone number and since the signal account is tied to that specific phone number, i can't use the account anymore.

Is signal open source? Can't someone fork the code and change it to be pure peer to peer over onion routing to set up credentials?
@BuckRogers1965 @signalapp I don't know. Even if Signal were open source, I don't know how to compile Signal and upload onto iPhone so that it actually runs, without me spending unacceptable amount of resources (money, time, nerves), and I don't know whether it's not intentionally obstructed.

Do you have to compile signal now? I am confused, why would you have to compile anything if it is open source?

@kouichi @disorderlyf they are dumb enough to disable something they use themself, just look all the US departement they disabled, and reenabled when they have seen the damage (not the one judge forced them to reopen).
