    @wtrmt @thisalex @lproven isn't religion being the center of power kinda the whole point of Herbert's fourth book "The God-King of Dune"?

    @ThinkrDotExe @thisalex @lproven
    I tend to think mostly about the first book: thank you for reminding me about this

    He was trying to avoid becoming a god and lost.

      @wtrmt @ThinkrDotExe @thisalex @lproven Frank wrote the whole series to make the point to avoid hero/idol/state/power worship.

        @lproven

        Oh well.. and then there was a machine storm and "Dune" describes a time of omnipotent nobles. So... they simply changed from being enslaved be machines owned by man to being enslaved by man with machines.

        Sorry, Dune does not describe a future one wants to live in unless he's a male member of nobility. (Kinda like "before french revolution.")

          @jasper89 @ThinkrDotExe @thisalex @lproven yes: he gets there. I was writing about the first book, which I have read a number of times.

          Warlords or messiahs both systems of government are brutal in their own way.

            @thisalex @lproven the techbros lost, the warlords won. Other outcomes are possible: for instance, religious fundamentalism, like a White Christian nationalism.

            In the world of Dune, religion is there, but it is not the center of power.

            @wtrmt @thisalex @lproven Depends. It is core to the Fremen, and significant to the Bene Gesserit - in addition to their powers they have their mythology that they base their decisions on.

              @lproven A better quote is the final speech from Chaplin's "The Great Dictator!

                @lproven A very apt quote. He certainly knew what he was talking about.

                @JustinMac84 @lproven maybe a visionary, or maybe just common sense after what happened to the world at the time.

                    @toriver @thisalex @lproven the Fremen are co-opted by the missionaria protectiva, then, they’re given a new purpose by Kynes into a terraforming effort, to be converted later by the “caudillo” into religious zealots.

                    There’s a story arc for both Paul and the Fremen. I liked the way that the conflict within the different Fremen factions played out in the recent movies.

                      @AlexanderVI @lproven

                      I simply don't like the universe Dune presents. A universe with the choice between being ruled by either a brutal autocrat, a benevolent autocrat or a jihadist sect following some "messiah" is not really a universe I like to be read quotes from.

                      If you need a sci-fi-quote from me its the end of "Roadside Picnic": "HAPPINESS, FREE, FOR EVERYONE, AND LET NO ONE BE FORGOTTEN!"

                      Else I'd go for the end of "Shockwave Rider" too.
