#Mosstodonif it's an old railroad tie preserved at some point with creosote, the softer wood likely absorbed more, and now decays more slowly; the harder grain having less poison has become a better moss substrate.

Oh cool, that makes sense!I wonder if it also has something to do with moisture retention for similar reasons, usually these ties are coated in moss, but temperatures have been near freezing and so maybe the softer wood has become unsuitable while the grain thaws more quickly or something.
