Is anyone using Mastodon as their primary social media and is it working for you?

@LianaBrooks@mastodon.online I used Mastodon as my primary social media for almost a year, only have recently moved to Sharkey instead but it was amazing. The system is pretty simple and does have some limitations but all around if you are coming from a microblogging background via Twitter or another social similar to that it should have most of what you want.

Is LinkedIn social media? I started an account at some point, friended some people and never updated it. That was probably 8-10 years ago I think.

@LianaBrooks Yes. I can't emphasize enough how liberating it is to get off the dopamine/hysteria hamster wheel that is mainstream social media.

@LianaBrooks Love it! I sacrificed a lot of local engagement when I left Elon's mess, but the communities available here make up for it, afaic.
An environment not controlled by plutocrats is a much better fit for me.
Also starting to branch out in the Fediverse (via Peertube).

Yes. Biggest issues have been instance retirements and replication issues (every so often, my wife will ask if I haven't been posting because she stops seeing my posts on her instance).

I end up commenting on BlueSky after following bridgy links.

@LianaBrooks Yes and yes. The fediverse is currently my only social media other than WhatsApp (if that counts) which I only use to keep in touch with those who won't move to Signal.

I closed my Twitter and LinkedIn accounts.
I still have a Reddit login, but I stopped using it and deleted almost all of my 13 years of posts there when it enshittified.
I never, ever created a Facebook account, and have all Meta services blocked by my PiHole.
I did create a Bluesky account, mostly to squat on my username there. I don't use it except to visit bridged posts from Mastodon.

Briefly used FB for about a year but nuked the account, even though it meant losing touch with all my old friends from my partying days whom I'd only just got back in touch with, but for various reasons thats a lifestyle I have to put behind me so its not that great a blow..

@LianaBrooks I am, and very happy here. I also have a Bsky account because there are some folks I can only interact with there, but I still think of Masto as my true home.
