Is anyone using Mastodon as their primary social media and is it working for you?

@LianaBrooks Yes this is my primary social media interaction but I am not as satisfied with it as I would wish to be. It's harder to find the types of accounts I am interested in following - predominantly news and arts/culture - but it feels safer and more affirming than twitter ever did. Still, I would like more community within my interests.

@LianaBrooks yes and yes. I regularly get news items related to computer security before my colleagues because of the people and hashtags that I follow. It has proven itself to be a valuable resource.

I do not use X, Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, or TikTok.

I do have Facebook and LinkedIn accounts that I primarily use for workplace activities. I also use the Facebook account to promote a local event once a month. That's it.

I use Discord for TTRPG related projects and news.

@LianaBrooks yes to both of these. I've found Mastodon to have more interaction, takes better action against spammers / bots (or any other reports), nobody writes posts that sound like they've been written by AI, and people actively tell you to not check as often (there's nothing that wants to keep you on it).

I've used Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn as my primary social networks in the past, and since October 2022 Mastodon has been my primary one.

Abandoned Twitter couple years before I left Facebook. I left Facebook after getting a computer that was more capable than playing FarmVille, then WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook. Then there was a period with Google+ for me.

There was a gap time. Then I found about Mastodon, Fosstodon to be specific, which was founded by people who were active on G+.
I have been on Fediverse since 2019.

Im still getting into it but this is where I'm at. Many of the topics I used to engage with on X are non existent or limited to bots reposting X or substack content. Im not a programmer which seems to be a large swath of content I see rn.

Still enjoying the type of stuff I see enough to keep me here and hopeful it continues to grow.

I do wish more of my off-line friends were on here, though. And most of the outdoor adventure/photography community is on Instagram, where I have an account that I rarely use. I check there regularly to check for any messages or comments I need to reply to, but try to minimize any interaction that will give Meta more data.

But just this evening I saw someone follow me and it was an activist friend whom I haven't seen in person in almost 40 years. If I recall right, we had some online interaction 20+ years ago on Facebook or somewhere. I might send her a quick DM saying hi with my contact info. But I wish I could feel OK about just chatting, like I do here.

The other downside about the Fedi compared to Instagram in particular is that, as a photographer, I would get way more notice and traction there. I still occasionally post a photo and tell people to go look at my website, but it just makes me barf to know that everything I post there will feed Meta's AI slop machine.

@LianaBrooks Yes! I stayed away from all other platforms because.... billionaires. I barely ever post, but feel that here in the commie wierdo corner of the social Web, I have become less alone.
