In 1984 Winston Smith is taken to reeducation. He says that maybe “the party” can make you pretend you agree with them but in your heart you know some things are true: 2+2=4 for example.
The party man asserts that he has the power to erase even that.
After all, if not? you die. Everything you love will die.
Just start rationalizing it all— really who speaks to a police officer like that? And don’t we all remember how the election was stolen?

I can see how the rationalization works— the whole house of cards, of lies.
But one of the things that I love is actually knowing what happened. For better for worse, I just want to know. So, everything I love cannot survive by rationalizing.
I know what I saw. I know what happened.
