My work PC, that I do not control, was forcefully updated to Windows 11 and I am practically in tears.

All my settings are gone, all my systems are completely fucked up, the speakers don't work anymore.

I remember when upgrading to a new version of Windows was a thing to be excited about. Now... I feel violated.

      Update: now actually crying

My taskbar has been on the right side of my computer since the early, early 2000s, it's muscle memory at this point, I cannot use computers that have the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

Windows 11 has removed the ability to move the task bar. How do you people SEE any of the windows you have open? My work has me having like 30 windows open at a time and the only way to manage them all is to have them laid out top to bottom, this new taskbar is such hot garbage it takes up far too much screen real-estate.

I am checking to see if there are any corporate-approved start menu replacement applications.

      God fucking damnit.

Found a program called Windhawk that allows me to install windows UI mods that runs portable (no corporate permissions needed to install) and I am back down from the panic attack I was having

        Mostly.

How could Microsoft have fucked this up so badly? Like, I tried Windows 11 on my own personal PC at the very beginning and saw how bad it was, immediately went back to 10.

But... like... Sweet Zombie Jesus, did none of you test this at all? How did you release a thing that is so fundamentally broken and then just smile and go "it's not broken, you're not using it right" with a straight face?

@thevhswizard how is your corporate #IT not preventing that shite?

If that would've hapoened to me (which it doesn't because I don't do Windows but regardless!) I'd literally put that thing on the desk of IT and say "unfuck this mess!"…

Probably because that would require competent marketing, engineering and testing people for which Microsoft has none of the above.

@thevhswizard Yeah, the taskbar was a bit jarring when it centered the stupid button .. but that was easily fixable via options. I know a few folks with accessibility needs that the taskbar not being able to be moved really jacked them up. I'm glad you were able to find a solution for it.

Sorry your tuesday started off so rough, I hope the rest of the week is better! Good luck with the Win11 fight.

@kkarhan I am in a tiny tiny vestigial arm of a massive multi-million dollar international corporation. We used to be part of a much bigger department but that department closed, and only we remain, sort of on our own off to the side.

If the corporate org chart was the animal kingdom taxonomic tree, we're a platypus. Most people don't know we exist and those who do don't care, and generally that's fine with us because we it keeps things simple.

Unfortunately, we're still beholden by corporate IT group policy, despite how many times we have to reiterate we're a TECH SUPPORT DEPARTMENT and need access and permissions and things like that. We've been on order to do the Windows 11 upgrades for a while now, I've just been skillfully dodging them, but they finally caught up to me

                    @thevhswizard Personally, I can't use #Windows at all.

It makes me feel physically ill and it doesn't support all the tools I need.

-even #macOS only works for me if I get sudo privilegues and even then I've to install dozens of tools with brew…

I run my own biz, and have used Windows for it since 1994, but instead of installing Windows 11, I bought 2 MacMinis. Wish I could just run Linux, but I need some proprietary programs and hardware for my work that just don't work on it yet. So, I feel ya on this - sorry you don't get to make the decisions for the OS you have to use for work.

@thevhswizard @kkarhan I felt this way around 2015 at work. I started by running linux in a VM. I shared the vm image with colleagues. Eventually I literally wiped my work machine and put linux on IT. Then we started buying desktop machines from ebay and putting them under our desks and built a cluster of linux machines. Then we hired a guy to manage them who doesn't report to IT. Then we bought racks and real servers. We just got rid of our last windows machine and IT just provides DNS.

@thevhswizard Have you access to the BIOS settings ?
That was one of my important requirements to boot Linux Mint from an external disk (via USB). I just changed the boot order: USB first, then internal disk.
Without external disk the system behaved like intended, so no obvious sign of running Linux mostly.
From time to time I booted Windows to do updates.
Company IT had all the important stuff (support tickets, time management, asset management, ...) on Citrix. The network "security" was solely based on a fixed MAC address. So I booted Linux from the external disk. For a checkpoint VPN client (to connect to customer networks) I had a Windows VM in place. Even he authentication via Smartcard everything worked fine - you can access USB devices (cardreader for the smartcard) from virtualbox.
