    URGENT:

#Trans people in Germany need your help. Our government is seriously considering to create a list of people who changed their name/gender under the recent self-identification law. This is obviously a terrible idea, especially considering the increasing popularity of the far-right party. The petition linked below would at least force the government to discuss this issue and reconsider... if we managed to reach 30.000 signatures within the next eleven days.

I recently learned that apparently living in Germany is not required to sign, so I kindly ask you to help us (and ideally share this petition with your peers). To make the process easier for you, I took screenshots of the website and translated everything. If there's anything else you don't understand, feel free to reach out to me!

@Beurkeek So much energy has been wasted on this petition.

Dobrindt's proposed edict (the original reason for it in summer 2024) was retracted in October last year already from Bundesrat - not Bundestag, so the petition was misaddressed from the start. There had been a campaign with many orgs cooperating. https://taz.de/Selbstbestimmungsgesetz/!6121370/

Even if Bundestag had been a valid addressee, the petition is worded so general and vague that it is hard to see how it could be operationalised at all. It is little more than some person's uninformed post that uses the petition platform of Bundestag for some kind of social-media-like show of solidarity that seems to have stressed out lots of queer folk who read the lack of signatures as a sign of missing support. @Beurkeek I have seen this petition going around Masto in waves for months now and I find it distressing how much attention has been taken by it, how much sadness the lack of signatures has already caused and also how much aggression has accompanied discussion about it, with hardly anyone ever stopping to ask why it might be that there are so little signatures, why it might be that relevant organizations are not pushing it.

This petition is not "urgent", it is - in my opinion - largely useless. It is a sink for attention and affect that will be buried in the archives of the Petitionsausschuss. It divests energy from where it would be far more useful. It also makes trans and queer folk potentially feel like no one cares about them, while the Campact petition had 260k signatures.

@foyglgezang The original proposal was indeed intended to be discussed in the Bundesrat, not the Bundestag, so choosing this particular platform may seem strange (or, as you chose to phrase it "uninformed") at first. However, I do understand this decision, as this is one of the few official channels to submit petitions to the government. Campact petitions meanwhile, are often ineffective, because while they may accumulate signatures much quicker, they can also be easily ignored.

In addition, it's entirely possible that a similar proposal could be submitted in the future. As someone quoted in the article you linked says, it's been rejected "for now".

I also disagree that the petition text is too vague/general and especially that it "has in effect invited anti-trans commentary to the platform". We don't "invite" hate by being publicly present or making demands, we are not responsible for other peoples' questionable comments. I have ZERO tolerance for this kind of victim blaming.

@Beurkeek Thanks a lot for translating and explaining. I learned a lot these days about ePetitions and who is allowed to sign. 🫶🏼
