I think the main thing keeping people on platforms like Discord & Facebook are the group management features.
Private Facebook groups offer the 'walled garden' vibe for special interests, while Discord makes it much easier to organize a community.
There's a feature gap that I haven't seen any other products step in to fill (especially for non-technical users).

All the stuff that is complying with age verification is supported by ads, which in my case means I am already boycotting it. This will just mean a few more sites that like Facebook cannot even be read without an account. A few more sites I treat as 404 and move on from as I do paywalled or adwalled crap.

That's ... Really not an alternative when we have to do everything we can to INCREASE our connections to others, and the way people connect is via the internet. You're basically suggesting the digital equivalent of "well I don't like capitalism so I'll just move to my hut in the woods", which fine. Good luck with that. But most of us need jobs in order to eat.
