@TechConnectify Shoutout to Biden's Infrastructure Bill, which (among many other things) provided grants and incentives to ISPs to build out broadband access in underserved areas. We live in a semi-rural spot in Arkansas (not farms, but populaton-sparse with big lots) and our options like yours were 12mbps DSL, flaky fixed wi-fi, or cell towers a long ways off. Last year a super-local company came and buried fiber lines _everywhere_ and we pay less now for excellent, reliable Internet - and they claimed some of that grant money as a reward. Would never have happened otherwise.

I think often about how the government mandated telco lines to everyone in the past - "it won't pay back" was simply not an option. We have the ability to do these things right now - it's not hard! it's not complicated! - but what's missing is the people in power to just DO IT.

Naturally, the rural broadband incentive was deliberately ended in 2025.

@TechConnectify Alec, thank you for this. Very strong and clear points. Came for the solar, stayed for the politics (I know, directly connected). It's the pinacle of 8 years watching Technology Connections videos. Trully well done 👏

@TechConnectify I can't comment on YouTube so I will put it here:
Yes boss man. But how will America control the world without oil? Priorities much? And you are saying that capitalism isn't the solution to human existence?! Blasphemy!
Great video by the way, I think the same.
Also, is a bit funny that you think you can vote your way our of this, both sides are just as bad, my friend, if you only knew how bad things really are in politics.

If your question is "where is the device that guarantees the inverter cuts off if it loses connection to the grid", it's internal to the inverter. All grid tie inverters should have this function.

I don't know the detailed German spec for these things but the British one is Engineering Recommendation G98.

@pfriedma Yeah, the system my neighbor used was similar but the back feed generator interconnect was to select the locally generated solar and wind resources, fall back to the grid power as a source, or use grid power as a sink, and that was *mostly* automatic, and using contactors. Knowing how that system worked is why I'm looking at this plugin PV and thinking the only saving grace in terms of fire safety is that it's 5A.

@BalooUriza @pfriedma The term to look for is "anti-islanding", which is a feature where the inverter detects that the grid is down and shuts off. Grid-tie inverters are required to do this, and should do it whether they're plugged into an outlet or hardwired into an electrical panel.

There are different schemes to detect this, usually they watch the voltage and frequency. You don't want it energizing a dead line, but you also don't want it to think someone else's generator is the 'grid'.

@BalooUriza @pfriedma The thing that worries me is that, with solar plugged in, you now have say a 15 A circuit, with the appropriate breaker, and another source downstream of that. So you potentially have extra fault current that can be dumped in from somewhere there wouldn't normally be a source.

In other words, your circuit with wire sized for 15 A could now possibly source that plus whatever the solar is kicking in.
