The Tokaido Shinkansen continues operating in conditions that would shut down most rail systems.

    **Engineering behind it:**
    🔹 Advanced snow detection sensors
    🔹 Heated track switching systems
🔹 Aerodynamic design prevents snow buildup
    🔹 Real-time monitoring & predictive maintenance
    🔹 Automated de-icing systems

Since 1964, the Shinkansen has maintained a perfect safety record while running at 320 km/h.

@xavierdatatech This brings to mind a notorious episode with British Rail in 1991, with disruption caused by the unusual (for Britain) ‘type of snow’, which the media turned into British Rail blaming ‘the wrong type of snow’: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_wrong_type_of_snow

@xavierdatatech Well, there is the Japanese trains…And there is the others!

And I do not ever speak about the service and the people that are working for these companies.

It’s a "no match" for the rest of the world.

@xavierdatatech Is that urea (same as used on airplanes) ? What do they do about the run-off? If urea is just left to run into nearby streams, you'll get over-fertilization and dead water-ways. If they manage the run-off, kudos to them. It's got to be pretty expensive though.

@xavierdatatech Initial Shinkansen has top speed of 210 kmh at launch in 1964 (raised to 220 shortly after).
While the French TGV reached 260 in 1981 and 270 shortly thereafter, the Shinkansen would reach 270 in 1992, and 300kmh in 1997 (Nozomi trains, series 500).

Does not detract on the perfect safety record of the lines and trains. But important to note that speeds have progressively been increased.

@xavierdatatech it's almost as if, and this is crazy talk here, if you make a large infrastructure system a national priority and then fund it well, you CAN have nice cross continental rail travel.

Oh goodness if Amtrak or via had had this commitment we'd have Toronto to LA Hi speed rail in a day, downtown to to downtown no airport.

@xavierdatatech It’s a phenomenal thing. Spotlessly clean, loads of room inside, on time to the minute (often seconds), plus we were lucky enough to see the famous Doctor Yellow shinkansen on our very first trip! Fascinating machine.

@xavierdatatech loved riding it. Last time round we were shocked to learn our train was delayed. Turns out that a 270 km/h (170 mph) tornado *will* cause a delay, caused by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Peipah_%282025%29

Still amazing quality, comfort and just plain fun to ride

@xavierdatatech While the reactions here lament how we in the West run our trains, It is in my opinion that we will never have such an efficient and smooth operating rail system over here. It requires more than demand and money alone, namely a culture change. We cannot have nice things here with rampant vandalism, individualism (people as well as countries/states) and ultra capitalistic society. Sadly I just don't see it happening.
