Austin Applebee, 13, was tasked by his mum to kayak back for help, but it took on water so he had to swim 2.5 miles back. On the beach, he sprinted another mile to the nearest phone to ring the coastguard, then passed out. Rescuers found his mum and two younger siblings clinging to the paddleboard about 9 miles out.
