In Laziness Does Not Exist, social psychologist Devon Price argues that what people call “laziness” is a myth. Instead of laziness, people’s lack of productivity is usually caused by real barriers such as anxiety, lack of clear steps, exhaustion, or other contextual factors that make tasks difficult to complete. Price says judging others (or ourselves) as lazy ignores these underlying causes and reinforces harmful cultural beliefs that tie self-worth to productivity. He suggests that understanding the true reasons behind inaction leads to more compassion and better support for people struggling with motivation, rather than blaming them for being lazy.
