@EUCommission @fishidwardrobe I was very surprised when I tried to dial the non-emergency police number but dialled 112 instead of 101, immediately hung up and dialled 101, then got a callback from the 999 operator to find out why I hung up

Today is European 112 Day 🇪🇺

📞 112 is the EU’s single emergency number.

It connects you to ambulance, fire brigade or police. It’s free of charge across Europe and offers language support in many countries.

A life-saving number everyone should know.

@fishidwardrobe @EUCommission Not too surprising as 112's introduction in the UK pre-dates Brexit by a couple of decades and is only a few years younger than the EU (as opposed to the EEC) itself:

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/999_(emergency_telephone_number)#History

                > The pan-European 112 code was introduced in the UK in April 1995[31] with little publicity. It connects to existing 999 circuits.

(Also, YYYY-MM-DD is perfectly fine for people in Japan, Korea, China and Hungary)

@phl @Caprarius @mikaeleiman @EUCommission In case my last note was not clear, I was just kidding. I know a lot of these has to do with how languages work. In Spanish, today is 11 de febrero de 2026, so, our order in conversation is 11-2-2026, and that’s why we use that. Cultures from the east just adopted standards because their calendars are way different (lunar, lunisolar, with eras, etc). I like to make fun of it, because the internet 🤷‍♂️

@haaflife @EUCommission Are yours subcontracted to private operators that exploit their employees too? Might be worth looking into who runs it, because in Andalucia and Valencia that's exactly what "happens".

Just in case some EUropeans think the EU somehow *operates* 112. It does not.

@Veza85UE @EUCommission good question, I have no idea! In Germany, where I used to live and work as a paramedic, the agents of the emergency hotline were well paid and highly qualified (medical background + work experience in emergency services + extra training)

@EUCommission Thanks to the EU, not only Europe has it, many countries around the world have 112: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/112_(emergency_telephone_number) -- all of Continental Europe, big chunks of Africa, India, and many Pacific islands! And many countries (eg China, US) redirect with a voice message to their local equivalent.

Quite a great success for those who battled to get it everywhere! Thanks folks from 1976 at CEPT!

@EUCommission 112 works exactly the same as 999 in Britain. The call goes to the same emergency operator if dialed from any landlines, payphones or mobile phones (even if locked as 999).

@EUCommission you hear all the time "the EU cost us soooo much, what does the EU do for us?"

People are so ignorant, cause they don't remember, how it was once. I am out of a generation that had the experience!

One phone number for emergency calls, you can visit a doctor in another EU country with your insurance card, no passport needed into EU, no problem with your EU driver license, you pay the same price in a foreign EU mobile phone net, like at home etc.

Just more of EU standardization! 👍

@SummerOf68 @EUCommission IN which part of the EU do you not need a passport on entry from outside the EU? There is ONE place and I am 100% sure you don't know where it is

@SummerOf68 @EUCommission Also in European English we don't use American spellings so it is standardisation
