If you somehow still considered uploading your face/ID to Discord, here's one more reason not to: Peter Thiel seems to be the lead investor in the service that implements the age check.

@charlesdelavalleepoussin @nina_kali_nina Age verification is not in fact a good thing, and it's inherently impossible to implement in a private manner.
I'm no expert but we do check age when selling alcohol, vapes or knives in shops.
In a shop the vendor looks at the photo ID (eg student card, driving license, other) but does not keep it.
That seems to be a proportionate approach.
Sadly I don't know of anything equivalent in the digital world.

There's a line in an old punk song that I sing in my head when I see this stuff.
'The shit we have to climb through is the shit we choose to take'
Choose to take this, then it's your shit to climb through for a long time. The next choice will be harder.
Your choices matter to your future. Make an actual choice, an actual active sacrifice.
Your and you is personal and collective.
Choose how & who you want to live as. Right choices cost less than easy ones in the end.

@nina_kali_nina this is even more worrisome as Discord "experiments" with collecting data on users' gender, https://www.dexerto.com/tech/discord-is-allegedly-assigning-gender-to-users-with-machine-learning-ai-2721391/
Ties to Thiel and through that, Palantir, mean there's a risk of using it as a surveillance tool to gather information on trans people for potential search-and-destroy operations. -

@Sonlight there's a long tradition of naming creepy companies after creepy things from Tolkien ;(

@charlesdelavalleepoussin the answer, in case of the UK, lies in a 2000-page-long document. The topic is complicated, and I'm not qualified to talk about it in depth, unfortunately.
@nina_kali_nina @charlesdelavalleepoussin Basically some countries will no longer have clearnet instances. -

I joined Discord because a blog suggested it would be great for meeting others doing research on genealogy.
It's been noisy and useless and I haven't used it for years.
It's a good time to delete the account.

@nina_kali_nina Evidently there's an accord to dis cords now...

oh ok.
I would urge readers not to have blind faith in things like Signal or Tor.
This is from 2013, over a decade ago, they've advanced since:
"The National Security Agency (“NSA”) has developed techniques to circumvent the anonymity offered by the Tor network. "

@charlesdelavalleepoussin @lispi314 well, it's less about this, and more about "there is no internet unless you login with your account tied to your passport" which is pretty bad

indeed, some billionaires are demanding every user on the internet is never anonymous
""the authenticity of every person that expresses themselves online""

@nina_kali_nina Thiel is nearly an anagram of evil, the nature infused into his core it seems.

@charlesdelavalleepoussin @ariarhythmic @nina_kali_nina There is also no cloning of faces in a face-to-face meeting.
There is every possibility for ”age verification” farming in digital settings if there is no permanent connection to an official ID.
