Is anyone using Mastodon as their primary social media and is it working for you?

Yes and yes. I have no social media presence outside of mastodon and I prefer it this way.

@LianaBrooks I was only on facebunk for a month during the pandemic and I ditched it pretty quickly because I felt kind of dirty after awhile. Very distasteful. I'm not sure if I'm getting much out of Mastodon. I have a feed of stuff I kind of like but, nobody I know is on it except one guy who doesn't post. I find it difficult to find people on it. I'll keep on it and it may change although I'm not sure social media is good for much. To be truthful, I don't know why people seem to like soc/med.

@LianaBrooks yeah, I don't remember what was the last straw but last January I finally deleted my (already disused & derelict) Facebook & Instagram accounts. I never got into Tiktok and left the musky Twitter with great haste, despite it being my last stronghold of "social media" still in heavy use. I had tried Bluesky for a bit but really only visited it like once a month until they decided to go with the age verification garbage and just left (can't even delete my account without accepting the new terms and I didn't care enough to pursue as I had barely any content in there anyway).

On the other hand the Fedi and my self-hosted Mastodon instance doesn't just align with my values and gives me full control I never head around my social media, it has also grown, bit by bit to a point where it absolutely can and does serve as my primary social media lifeline! It took some time but I couldn't be happier with it.

@LianaBrooks yes and yes, although what's working for me probably doesn't count for people used to twitter back when it was good.

@LianaBrooks Yes and yes. I used to be very active on Twitter (never used FB or IG), but left when Musk bought it. I am here mostly every day and I like it. I miss some people and some topics, still hope they will eventually show up.

@LianaBrooks Yes, it's my only social media, and it does what I need. I follow some accounts bridged from Bluesky but I spend almost all my social media time on Mastodon.

@LianaBrooks yup, I abandoned Twitter for here years ago. I do still haunt FB, because family, but the vast majority of things I post there are actually links from here.

Yes. Only social media. Mastodon is entirely sufficient once you get a good collection of follows.

Yeah and I'm addicted, but I really wish it had a better discovery process. Lots of people have complained about it. There are several sites that attempt to index content but they are designed for aliens and unusable.

I barely ever use Facebook any more, it's just a tool with a couple of useful chats on it, but the random feed and cross-pollution on it was actually *useful* at times.

On Mastodon, even through feeds, it's a dark, quiet place.

@LianaBrooks, yep. I still have my Facebook profile but I have cleaned it up almost complately and only use it for a few FB groups and Messenger.

@LianaBrooks yes and no. Mastodon is my Twitter, Lemmy is my Reddit, Pixelfed is my Instagram and Loops is my TikTok - all works great. However I have not found a Fediversed Facebook, GitHub and LinkedIn yet so the digital migration is not completed

Both for a sense of community on my local instance as well as keeping up-to-date with news that is generally not very well covered on traditional media.
