I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.

People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.

So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good

@danirabbit Bacon is great because it adds a lot of flavor even when used in small amounts.

Bacon should not be the main part of a meal; it is a spice.

@danirabbit The last 10% is the hardest bit, but the first 90% is the most effective. "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good", as the saying goes.

@danirabbit I love this. There’s precedent too — I know lots of people who are kosher+bacon.

Really, you can also just … commit to eating more vegetables. Have a steak once in a while as a treat! Just think about your goals in meals rather than being on autopilot.

@danirabbit So weird that it's bacon. I've been vegetarian for 27 years and I don't miss bacon at all. There are many forms of meat that I remember being a lot better.

@danirabbit I'm sort of like that, although it's vegan plus eggs, cheese and yoghurt. (Cheese and yoghurt are hard to find vegan versions of and eggs I just flipping love.) Otherwise I only very rarely eat meat or fish and I use oat milk.

@danirabbit my parents would never stop eating meat, cheese or milk. However they found a vegan butter replacement and use that all the time now.

historical rhyme; lots of northerly peasant food is vegan with only a little bacon and buttermilk because even if they could raise meat and dairy they had to *sell* most of that -- little lardoons of bacon, and the buttermilk left over after making butter for market, is the home food

                        Also delicious so

                          @danirabbit Exactly.

It has taken me a long time to be "mostly" vegetarian.
People change their diet quickly, and then complain and whinge and don't stick to it.

Of course that's going to be hard, unless you've got serious will-power.

First I started eating veggie stuff at work for lunch as it was really nice, but still having "normal" meals at night with my family.

Over the years I ate less and less meat, and found good alternatives (some even my meat-eating other half likes).

I found some good cheese alternatives.
I found a nice tea that doesn't require milk.
I use plant milks for pretty much everything.

I thought i'd never give up bacon, but I don't really miss it. I don't think i've had bacon for more than a year now.
I can smell it when other people are cooking it, but it doesn't really bother me.

I'm still far from being vegan, but i'm getting close....

The last thing I need to cut out is butter and cheese.

Vegan food has come a long way from the 80s and 90s when it was just crappy dry "nut roasts" and things like that.

There's no excuse not to at least eat more vegan stuff. There's so much choice now.

@chewie @danirabbit Learning how to use spices also helps tremendously. I recently discovered lemon ginger rice. Chickpeas take spices a lot like chicken. Curries, tikka masala, vindaloo, North African tagines, and more generally do really well with chickpeas instead of meat.

I love veggie curries. They don't need to be "hot" spicy, but they taste really nice.
We have a good selection of takeaways and restaurants locally, as we have a relatively large Indian population.

@danirabbit I mean until my health issued forced me back on meat, I never had chicken anymore, it is the most trivial thing to replace and pork I only had bacon or dried sausages

like yeah, we still ate some amount of beef and fish, but 5 out of 7 days tended to end up meat free by chance

(sadly health issues have made chicken kind of mandatory, best amino acid balance for humans, and given how little I can eat, I kind of need that)

Maybe you can’t completely de-Google or de-Apple or de-Amazon your life. Can you switch one thing? Can you use DuckDuckGo? Move your passwords to Bitwarden? Open a Fastmail account?

People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.

So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good

@danirabbit big +1 for just going for a more vegetable heavy diet. They’re wayyy hardier in the fridge so I deal with way less food spoiling on me, and my insides felt way better when I gave up eating meat everyday.

When I was a little kid every Sunday my dad would get up early to make everyone eggs and sausage and the nostalgia of how much I still enjoy that for breakfast sometimes is hard to let go, but I can def have veggie pasta for dinner like 3 nights a week

I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.

@danirabbit For a few years while transitioning to a vegetarian (not vegan) diet, I described myself as an ovo-lacto-pepperonio vegetarian.

historical rhyme; lots of northerly peasant food is vegan with only a little bacon and buttermilk because even if they could raise meat and dairy they had to *sell* most of that -- little lardoons of bacon, and the buttermilk left over after making butter for market, is the home food

                                        Also delicious so

@danirabbit I definitely think we need a lot more “harm reduction” and a lot less “if you are not perfect you are the enemy.”
