    The best news of 2026 so far:

    George Conway enters the midterms race as a Democrat, and this is REALLY bad news for Trump.

    This is a former Republican with deep inside knowledge who is now on a mission to destroy Trump and reinstate democracy. He is a lawyer, and he has a proven track record of going after Trump on his own dime.

    Liked, respected, capable, and very, very dangerous for Trump.

    @randahl

    Wow!

    I've been following the US demise since ~2015 and taking into account George Conway's position back then and his being married to Kellyanne... it's pretty shocking really, that he's arrived at this turning point. It's a good measure of the extent that the US has crumbled, for this to happen.
    What he's said about his intentions are pretty encouraging. I like the impeachment bit the most.

      @JohnnieMac @randahl Agree. Our system of government has reached a crisis point. The only way out of this mess is for Democrats to have more fortitude and for all potential voters to read, think, and vote.

      It’s gone way beyond whether a candidate is “progressive enough” or whatever quibbles come to mind. Not voting equals a vote for Trump and his thuggish allies and the stranglehold they currently have on all three branches of the Federal government.

        I think it will matter...

        Another centrist Dems Administration may again fail to get re-elected.

          Fuck that guy.

          We don't need right wing Democrats. If he wants to run somewhere in a Republican area, great, go do that. Maybe he could bump some insane Trumpist out of office.

          But the Democrats need to elect leftists in the primaries. This guy is not left at all.

                @JohnnieMac@mastodon.scot @randahl We don't trust him. I'm happy he's left the dark side of rancid Nazi cunt GOP. He was fine with every one of Trump's SCOTUS picks. All of them.

                Happy to have him help beat the Nazis. He's not fit to lead us, however. He is still LEARNING.

                  @randahl what? He’s running in one of the most Blue districts in the country and still holds mostly conservative positions. In no way shape or form is this a victory; at best, it’s just an attempt to drive the party to the right. If by some miracle he wins the primary he’s just taking a seat from a better Democrat. It won’t hurt Trump one iota.

                    @Doppelganger75 @randahl But that doesn’t mean electing somebody who would be mediocre on policy. In NY-12 the primary is the election; no Republican has a shot of being elected. Why not elect the best Democrat you can, as opposed to a Republican who only left the party last year?

                      @randahl

                      He should run independent. He has a large enough profile to win a race as independent and if he dosen't win, he pulls votes from both sides evenly.

                              @randahl There are nine other Democrats also in the race (as of two months ago!), most of whom would be better. I like Alex Bores, myself, but I’m mostly interested in policy. Conway being a lawyer in Congress is irrelevant (many of them are); it’s not like there’s some secret trick he can use to attack Trump better than other representatives. He already has an enormous public following and doesn’t need to be elected to Congress to keep attacking Trump (and most of these other Democrats would do that too); it’s not like he’ll reach a greater audience than he already has. And if you’ve paid attention to NY’s politics at all in the last year, the mood is decidedly skewing Dem socialist. He has no legislative experience; he just tweets a lot. Apart from the fact that he’s recognizable on Twitter, what does he bring to the table? Why elect him over the other people, especially when his politics are realistically at odds with the district he wants to run in?

                                @randahl I personally don’t think the Lincoln Project has accomplished anything electorally; it raised a lot of money, got some clicks, and that was it. Whether it persuaded anybody is really up for debate. But if it did and if it was useful, he could stay there instead! Or he could run in a more competitive Republican district! Why isn’t he doing that?

                                    @randahl For what it's worth, remember that this guy was married to "alternative facts" Kellyanne Conway, a proud member of the Trump regime.

                                    Remember also, this is a wealth struggle, and Ds+Rs are from the same class.

                                    Someone willing to publicly fight against this regime is always a good thing, and I'll vote for him if I get the chance, but remember also that the Democrats are *so pathetic* that these fucking people took over the country. And they've been that way for an entire generation.

                                      @zeblarson very interesting. Thank you.

                                      I am fully aware of the left turn in NYC, and I can definitely see why that would lower Conway’s chances.

                                      But I think your points and my point are not mutually exclusive. Conway can both be the politically wrong candidate for the district, as you say, while at the same time being a very strong weapon against Trump. The man has an enormous platform both in legacy media and on social media (e.g. 2.2 million followers on X, 800,000 on Bluesky).

                                        Agreed. I know non-Americans are justifiably tired of hearing about American politics. But good lord do so many of them not understand how American politics works.

                                          @randahl I really don't think that what the Democratic Party needs is more Republicans.

                                          I'll accept Conway as an ally against Trump, but I sure wouldn't vote for him in a primary.
