The snow has begun here in central Virginia. Very little so far, maybe .7cm or so, drifts up to 1.5cm?
We're to get 15-20cm, with another 10cm of freezing rain tomorrow.
Now, I am well aware that in Toronto, or in Boston, 15-20cm, it is to laugh.
But that's because those places have architecture, roads, vehicles, electricity -- generally infrastructure and experience -- with that amount.
We don't play that shit in Virginia. This will be between 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 year storm for us.

I lived in Fairfax VA 20 yrs ago. I know how a little snow can shut everything down. Good luck. -

And this is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with lots of twisty passages and switchbacks.
Schools will close for likely the whole week.
Here in the country it's all schoolbuses, and ain't nobody wanna drive or let their kids ride on a schoolbus that drives on switchbacks in snow or ice.

Think, if you live up North, how many people do stupid shit in their cars during the first couple of snows of the season.
Now remember that the first couple of snows in Virginia generally overlap with the last couple of snows in Virginia.
Your dumbassed drivers are dumbassed cuz they forgot how to drive since last year.
Our dumbassed drivers are dumbassed cuz they forgot how to drive since last decade.

@GeePawHill It would be nice if 20 cm of snow here in Toronto was "it is to laugh", but sadly not (or not any more). 20 cm is still a lot for us to get in a day and while it might not shut down everything, things will definitely not be normal.
(Environment Canada is forecasting anywhere from 22 cm to 39 cm by Monday morning. If it's on the high side Toronto will probably be mostly shut down for at least Monday.)

@GeePawHill I believe the impressive places in (eastern) Canada for snow and snow removal are Montreal and (maybe?) Quebec City. Those places have it down to a large scale science because they have no choice, they get so much of it.
(I've seen Montreal videos of snow clearance and they are very well organized. You can tell they get a lot of snow because they don't plow it out of the road, they hoover it up into trucks and cart it away.)

Anyway, not to worry about me or mine, we'll all be fine, as per earlier post about intentional community. Back in the day, we'd be cut off from leaving the land for 4-6 days, w/no power. We know how to deal.
(Sometimes I just like talking about something other than armed armored masked men killing American citizens on the street for no reason.)
I'm far more concerned about my rural neighbors, often poor and elderly. And, of course, the dumbasses who drive.

@GeePawHill I’ve lived all over, last place being Texas, and definitely understand about lack of infrastructure to handle the weather, along with ill-experienced drivers. Wishing you all safety and uninterrupted electricity & water supplies.

@GeePawHill Wisdom. I live in Sillycon Valley, as in can walk to where Shockley Laboratories usedtabe. If I woke up to hear that it had snowed, I'd stay home that day. Well, I might walk out to see the runoff in Permanente Creek.
I used to drive in snow in the suburbs of Washington DC. Favorite car for that was a 1965 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Fill the gas tank to put 26 gallons of weight on the drive axle and remember the state motto, Drive Gently.
