Safety nets make it harder for millionaires to become billionaires. They rein in their excesses. If they don't, no one would work for them. Hence, they hate safety nets.

@rayckeith this is always my argument for those who love the entrepreneurial thing. A safety net means people can take risks knowing that whilst there's downside risk, they're not going to ruin the rest of their life. There's a world of difference between mistakes have consequences, and the world where there's mistakes you can never pick yourself back up from.

Problem is, the Norwegian safety net is literally killing people + planet, because it's taxes paid by Carbon Major Oil company Equinor.

Mostly negative freedom, as in "freedom from" (government), rather than "freedom to" (do something). see -- Timothy Snyder - On Freedom. But yes, this is a systemic myth which is hard to break until people live it. Sort of like bike lanes.

@rayckeith The other perspective, compared with other European countries, is that Norway is more business friendly, having less red tape for one. It's comparatively easier to start and run a business, and for example, they don't have universal minimum wage, this being decided on a sector-by-sector basis, as a dialogue between employers and trade unions, and this ends up benefiting everyone; as industry can adapt to changing conditions, yet it keeps wages high.

@rayckeith but in Germany, the bestest lapdog of the US, big money does not even want free people. They want slaves, like the USDaddy. And that allone explains kinda anything.

It's been a tradition that every two or three years some international body would warn that the Danish social safety net was too generous and would bring us to ruin.

Today, after decades of ignoring them, Denmark has an AAA credit rating.

I haven't actually read another one of those the last couple of years. Should I start worrying, or am I just out of touch?

@rayckeith @falcennial This is one of those things that many, MANY Americans will always be against, despite it benefiting the working class directly, entirely because the term “socialism” has been so vigorously demonized there.

@rayckeith That's why german government plans to take away the last bits of safety net rn. They don't want their population free, they want their population desperate. So desperate that they take even the most disgustingly underpaid jobs.
