Dear parents;
Please do not expose your 3 to 6 year-old children to the news.
Do not have the TV news on when they’re in the room with you. Put them to bed and watch the 10 o’clock news or the 11 o’clock news
Do not have the news on the radio when you are in the car with them
I had more than one four year-old approach me this morning to tell me about the nightmares they’ve been having
One was describing in high detail about how the “police“ came -in his dream- dragged him out of the house, and were “mean” to him.
As adults, we can’t process this trauma very well: don’t expose your young children to it
Thank you-

@LShashaty @MsMerope my 2,5 Y old son, told me the day after 9/11:
Mom, in America , a big plane crashed into a castle.
1 minute television was enough, to put it in his brain. -

@MsMerope "Someone shot the President," 1963. Sometimes knowledge is important.

1 minute television was enough, to put it in his brain.My parents didn't obviously censor what I could see, but I was only allowed to watch "hard news" around age 6/7 - after I had learned where places are on the map and the distance between them, so I knew that something that happened the other side of London or in Tehran wasn't anything to be immediately frightened of (and it seems the same battles are being fought nearly 5 decades later!)
But I am also Asian so my parents were immigrants and learned at a very early age what it was like to be "different" and the threats/problems this could cause..

@c_merriweather @MsMerope But so is context. I was in 2nd grade when Kennedy was assassinated. We were about to go to recess when someone in the school office put the radio on over the intercom system. We had no idea what they were talking about, and we we still went out to recess.

my concern is that 3 to 6 year old age range that I have worked with now for over 40 years.
After the age of 7 or 8 ? that's a parent knowing what their child can process.
Then again parents let their little kids watch horror movies so

@MsMerope I remember at that age being convinced that any unexplained ticking sound might be an IRA bomb.
