A like on Mastodon/ActivityPub is an intimate "I saw what you did there and I want only you to know I like it". A Boost is "My people need to know". This is very different from how most "social" networks work. And I like it.

@jwildeboer I have used every social network since the beginning exactly like that. Yes, they often worked against it after some point.

@jwildeboer The reverse-time timeline also means people not from your timezone won't feature as much, which, in practice, means you'll see a lot less of USA in Europe. That's not a negative.

@jwildeboer My interpretation of likes and boosts is the same but then there are people who seem to just consequently like every answer to their posts.

@Jay16K @jwildeboer Same, with a couple of seconds of thinking between the two.

@jwildeboer Is it? It’s what I’ve done everywhere since way back. But I expect I’m old fashioned.

@jwildeboer It's also funny how quickly people forgot that that's how Twitter used to work too.

@HeptaSean @jwildeboer I haven't. Usenet had neither feature.

@TimWardCam @jwildeboer “I'm still even older!” is an interesting flex.
When starting discovering the Internet at the beginning of uni late 1990s, Usenet was already declining and basically an anti-social network of old white dudes yelling at clouds. -

My take on the star button is not quite so intimate.Sometimes it means, "Dang, I just boosted some stuff and I don't want to force folks to mute my boosts. So, I'll hit the star and bookmark. Maybe I'll boost it later. Meanwhile, star indicates that the post was seen, and others may notice this response."
