@Colgrace Welcome - hope you enjoy it here - I'm also on Bluesky, LinkedIn and the dreaded Facebook but definitely find I'm left in a much better mood after looking at my Mastodon feed than the others. My profile pic is our Hungarian rescue Freddie. I get a bit worked up about politics, lack of democracy and inequality. A fan of Douglas Adams - definitely one we lost too early...

Note: This is the #Fediverse as opposed to only Mastodon. You can move from one Mastodon home site [ such as your current home at mastodon dot social ] to another and from Mastodon to other Fediverse home sites sites that work in a similar manner. Akkoma and Pleroma sites are two examples. They all work together.
Further, there are Fediverse multimedia sites that work the same way and that also talk to Mastodon and similar sites. And, in general, it's not corporate controlled and it's often more rational than you'll find in the Old World sites.
You'll find trolls in any social media. However, the setup here makes it more difficult for them to get traction and to initiate dogpiles.
The Fediverse is, too, friendly to dog and cat fans. Check, for example, the hashtag #caturday. #caturday is where people post photos of Tom Baker covered in kittens. Credit for that post goes to:

I find that Mastodon is so diverse that it still has hidden corners, and I've got the personality type that *loves* to share cool things with others.
(Although I forgot to actually include @thisismyglasgow in my post. I've been here three years and I'm still not good at hashtagging, etc. my own posts. Thx for calling them in )
