It makes a lot more sense that Trump wants to annex Canada when you realize he is about to go to war with NATO over Greenland.

If Trump invades Greenland on a Monday, all American assets in Europe will be frozen by Friday. Come Monday they'll be seized.
-
@randahl I'm curious what the mood is like on various US military bases throughout NATO? Are service members getting their asses kicked by the locals if they go off-base? When I was in the Navy, that was definitely a thing we were aware of when we travelled.
-
@randahl The talking heads here in Canada postulate that after Greenland, Trump will make the same arguments to take the artic archipelago, at which point we'll be surrounded on all four sides, just waiting for the inevitable final takeover.
@rjohnston @randahl We’ll be waiting for the attempt. They will never win.

Once the US is at war with 31 NATO countries, having a free Canada — a NATO country — on the northern border suddenly becomes a security risk.
I sincerely hope the American people stops the fascist before he triggers World War 3.
@randahl
Trump&Co. aren’t going to be as successful at any of this as they would like us to believe. None of them have actually ever played this game before. The odds are stacked against them in my opinion. -
@fsinn Bookmarked. Thank you. But let's not get carried away with logic. This is the guy who's bullying people for their Nobel. @VikingChieftain @randahl

@dnkboston I don’t expect him to reason, and he’ll likely be dead anyway. I hope Republicans in Congress fear for their futures enough to act.

@fsinn @randahl Easy for a dude from Austria to say that, as Austria does not participate in "nuclear sharing" with the US. That is to say, the US doesn't make B61 nuclear weapons available to Austria - like we do for Belgium, Germany, Italy, Turkey, or The Netherlands.
I don't doubt that some NATO members will re-think their relationship with the US over Trump's idiocy. I'm not sure every country that currently enjoys access to B61 bombs will give them up for Greenland, though.
But with Trump's constant stream of bullshit, I wouldn't be surprised if maybe those countries with B61s today might make some discreet inquiries to UK or France or Israel for a "technology transfer".

@grumble209 “Rethink”?
An attack by the U.S. on Greenland puts the U.S. at war with all but a few NATO countries, and perhaps most notably, Canada. Every country that has already sent troops for “exercises” or to demonstrate their commitment, or has otherwise affirmed their commitment to fulfil their obligations under Article 5 have already said they would walk away from the U.S. to defend Greenland and Denmark.

Some pieces on this:
https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2025/02/13/Do-Not-Test-Us-Trump/Yes, the US military would have to deal with a Canadian insurgency, but they would also experience domestic sabotage that would make the Atesh look like amateurs. The US isn't Russia. Some 68-69% of eligible voters didn't vote for Trump. If even a small percentage of those people decide that Trumpism must end, you will see sabotage events popping up across the US like Fourth of July fireworks.

@fsinn @randahl Great article! I hadn't thought about how Canada might react (and I'd be curious if Whisky Pete and the JCS have thought about it, either).
Author didn't mention nukes once. I don't blame him - almost no one thinks about the nuclear sharing stuff these days. I only know about it because I worked in the same secure facility as the Leidos team maintaining the NATO nuke targeting software - I was on the team maintaining the software for StratCom.
If NATO blowback led to cancelling US arms exports, that would seriously kick our economy in the yarbles.

@VikingChieftain Yes, of course. We’re counting on it.

@grumble209 And your resistance at home would be the clincher to freeing the U.S. from this regime and restoring democracy.

@grumble209
Also, the U.S. is dependent on Canada’s military detection for the north, in our joint NORAD operations. If it were up to me, we’d be turning that dark the moment the US moves on Greenland.Also related: https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2025/02/13/Do-Not-Test-Us-Trump/

So what you’re saying is, the Canadian takeover of the U.S. to liberate peaceful people from a backward, hateful, violent and oppressive regime comes down to a box or two of candy bars?
DM me a PO box address. (You pay the tariffs.)

@fsinn @randahl What an offer! I'm 100 miles from Trail - I get my own. Or did - I'm not so blasé about border crossings anymore.
A lot of the Pacific Northwest would be fine declaring independence and waiting for the smoke to clear if things got ugly. Me, I'll swing to the good food without a second thought.
Nanaimo bars... yum.

@grumble209 Send me an address that is not your home and I kid you not, I will send you a box of Coffee Crisps.
Gotta run. Stay safe.
