@petergleick I guess that is the dynamical behavior of fascist groups - something about it makes them psychologically or structurally unable to stop themselves. Once they get sufficiently detached from honoring truth, they are only stopped by external forces. They delete the feedback loops that keep ordinary human groups sane.

Astonishing, isn't it? I heard someone say recently that it's important to remember that everywhere on the planet, the worst among us go into politics. I took a debate class in college, looking around wondering who the hell these dweebs were? Really not cool people. Turns out they were all going to be lawyers and some also said politics, which seemed weird for a 20 year old. I realized that day, that the power of politicians doesn't come from them as people. It's the position.
