Over the last few weeks I have noticed a behaviour in myself.

If I follow a link and I get a "We care about your privacy" popup, I click the "Reject all" button and read the article.

But if there is no "Reject all" button, just a link to a complicated set of preferences, I simply close the window and never see what the article had to say.

I wonder how many others do this.

And how many web-sites are losing A LOT of their traffic for this reason.

UPDATE: see replies, lots of people do this!

@mike I do the same, but started doing it relatively recently, within the last year or two.

@mike On ones with a "Deny all" option, if you go into the individual settings you will often find that lots of them have an _extra_ little toggle-switch, labelled "Legitimate Interest", that is _on_ by default and that I bet does not get turned off when you click "Deny all".

@mike I also do the same. Either that pop-ups and/or ads covering up what I am going to read. Instant close. I can read the news elsewhere 😂

@mike Me too. No "reject all" means I don't read - there are plenty of other web sites out there.

                    I do this too.

I also avoid visiting certain platforms too, like Substack, regardless of how interesting the article may seem.

@glynmoody I wonder whether sites that don't have a Deny All button have any idea how much business they're losing.

@mike @glynmoody They might. It's an easy statistic to create. But us closing the site is the point if such popups, isn't it? We would create traffic that doesn't produce sellable data. Sure, it's a black and white view on the issue. But in general that is why there is no obvious deny all option.

@mike Very much what I do. If I cannot say "no" with a click, I will tend not to bother.

I even do this at work - where I might be searching for something quite specific, but I am still not accepting sites which are desperate for me to let them know who I am.

@mike @jokeyrhyme there were mentions/news last year, that things (regulation-wise) will be simplified - for end-users that is I'm not sure where/how that ended though.

Btw, I'm aware that's not the solution to malicious compliance, but Consent-o-matic add-on usually does the job well.

Yes. If there is no button labelled ‘Reject All’ or ‘Accept Only Necessary,’ then it's goodbye.
