I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.

So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.

    Don’t believe the gatekeepers! #womeninSTEM

@Lunaphied if you search for magnet cat eye nails I'm sure you'll find something similar. These are relatively simple, people do a lot fancier things by now. There are, of course, also YouTube tutorials.

Any chance you wanna share how you achieved that effect? Looks absolutely amazing!!

@LisaLobmeyer a web search for magnet cat eye would do the trick. You need special polish (that comes with a magnet) These are relatively simple, people do a lot fancier things by now. There are of course also youtube tutorials.

@freyablekman That is awesome. I wonder how much it would cost to paint my car with nail polish, and how long it will last…

@su_liam I think the first nail polish in the 1920s was car paint, supposedly. So we'd be full circle 🙂

@afewbugs @freyablekman I remember a day in my physics lab where I wore nail polish and had to clean something with acetone. Not a great combination, but I survived!

@ditsch42 @afewbugs yeah classic nail polish and acetone are a good way to leave polish everywhere. The various gel nail types that require setting/curing (just like epoxy) are probably OK though

There is physics in everything, so this guy is just a misogynist supremacist, thinks he’s a “serious man” but he’s profoundly unserious, and doesn’t even know it.

@freyablekman My daughter wanted to follow my footsteps, and study mech engineering at Technical University Munich.

So on a girls day, some postgrad engineer decided he needed help at pouring liqiid silver into a form, on open stage. He picked her, 17 yo, a tiny build, long blonde hair, and is a bit on the endowned size of female charms. He made her dress in a protective suit that was huge on her, stand in it next to a furnace melting aluminium, for half an hour, the visor fogging, sweat pouring, and then handle 10 kgs of liquid aluminium. I bet he had fun, joking about small hands, and heavy lifting, while she was suffering the heat and the fear. The situation was as sexist as it was when I studied, 25 years earlier.

When she came home, she had decided on doing somethig less "hands-on", she then graduated in Applied Math..

@shadesofgrease @freyablekman that's so sad to hear. What an absolute dick. I had different but equally repelling experiences in electronics & computing as a teen; I was also afraid of chemistry. I hope your daughter has an awesome career. It must be amazing to understand mathematics!

I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.

So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.

@freyablekman so glad my high school physics teacher was a woman and I didn't have to deal with that bullshit.
