I really really hate QR codes. But a lot of people really like them. And they're useful during a talk for the people who really like them (I'm also including the text of the link, though, dammit!)

But... I have never done this before, and a lot of the "free QR code generators" look kind of scammy and I don't want to give people weird viruses or spam. So... fediverse, help!

EDIT TO ADD SOLUTION: within like 2 minutes https://zxing.appspot.com/generator

    I love you, fediverse.

@sundogplanets qrencode maybe? If you're on a *NIX system it's probably available in your package repo. There's also a Windows port: https://code.google.com/archive/p/qrencode-win32/

I love https://f-droid.org/packages/com.example.barcodescanner but there are lots in web only too. If you search for selfhosted ones usually there's a demo too

My main go-to on Linux is `qrencode`. Wholly local, yet it requires the use of the command-line and installation is OS-dependent (see “Libqrencode is ported to (…)” at the bottom of the project page).

@sundogplanets a lot of them include a url shortener which makes for simpler QR codes that scan more easily... I always used bit.ly in the past, it was fine, and gave some useful stats. But it has been a long while and I got my own shortish domain so just started using local software instead. If you just want straight up QR code generation then QR Code Monkey works fine too IIRC.

@sundogplanets Here are three unencumbered (and open source) tools that I regularly use:

                                  Web-based one, provided by @Framasoft :
                                  https://omnitools.framatoolbox.org/image-generic/qr-code

                                  Android application:
                                  https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.atharok.barcodescanner/

Linux command line (available in most distros packages directly):
                                  https://github.com/fukuchi/libqrencode

BTW: I also had a question today, and it was also instantly solved by my bubble.

This is, what the internet was supposed to be. Lovely people helping each other.

@sundogplanets I've used the qrencode tool to make qr codes. It's available for Linux and Mac (via homebrew).
