    @grumble209 “Rethink”?

An attack by the U.S. on Greenland puts the U.S. at war with all but a few NATO countries, and perhaps most notably, Canada. Every country that has already sent troops for “exercises” or to demonstrate their commitment, or has otherwise affirmed their commitment to fulfil their obligations under Article 5 have already said they would walk away from the U.S. to defend Greenland and Denmark.

@fsinn @randahl Great article! I hadn't thought about how Canada might react (and I'd be curious if Whisky Pete and the JCS have thought about it, either).

Author didn't mention nukes once. I don't blame him - almost no one thinks about the nuclear sharing stuff these days. I only know about it because I worked in the same secure facility as the Leidos team maintaining the NATO nuke targeting software - I was on the team maintaining the software for StratCom.

If NATO blowback led to cancelling US arms exports, that would seriously kick our economy in the yarbles.

Yes, the US military would have to deal with a Canadian insurgency, but they would also experience domestic sabotage that would make the Atesh look like amateurs. The US isn't Russia. Some 68-69% of eligible voters didn't vote for Trump. If even a small percentage of those people decide that Trumpism must end, you will see sabotage events popping up across the US like Fourth of July fireworks.

Also, the U.S. is dependent on Canada’s military detection for the north, in our joint NORAD operations. If it were up to me, we’d be turning that dark the moment the US moves on Greenland.

@fsinn @randahl What an offer! I'm 100 miles from Trail - I get my own. Or did - I'm not so blasé about border crossings anymore.

A lot of the Pacific Northwest would be fine declaring independence and waiting for the smoke to clear if things got ugly. Me, I'll swing to the good food without a second thought.

Once the US is at war with 31 NATO countries, having a free Canada — a NATO country — on the northern border suddenly becomes a security risk.

I sincerely hope the American people stops the fascist before he triggers World War 3.

@randahl Back in 2022, the US media coverage of the "trucker convoy" op in Ottawa came with a lot of "liberate Canada" rhetoric.

That was the first blip on my radar that USA could be more threat than ally. This is the same stuff the Kremlin did to Ukraine.

I think, the claim about national security is just a #Trump hoax story to keep #Americans support while in reality he wants
                        - Greenland for rare earths
                        - Canada for oil, uranium, Cooper and its forests
                        - ...

If he cared about security, he would not piss off his allies. He only cares about grabbing money as long as his presidency lasts.

His #tariffs threat against countries supporting #Greenland and #Denmark go in line.

@randahl it's not only that, but taking over Greenland is actually a real security risk for Canada. If surrounded in 3 sides from the US, Canada will become an even easier target.

Right now they only border the US from two sides: Alaska, which is very lightly militarized and mainland US.

Neutrality is very popular in Austria. I don't think that would change if someone else gets attacked.

Now if Austria itself got attacked that would be a different story...

I agree that Putin is happy about current developments within NATO.

@randahl I was rolling my eyes about Greenland last year until I looked at the map. If he has Greenland, Canada is surrounded. I expect the Canadians will fight very hard not to be annexed, and I'm not sure Trump would be successful, but it would be awful in the meantime, and he could easily cut off a lot of trade options.

The same map made me realize that the Venezuela gambit is also serving his ambitions in Mexico. He's taking the Monroe Doctrine more seriously than anyone ever has before.
