DuckDuckGo has a No AI version: https://noai.duckduckgo.com. To set it as your default browser in Firefox:
1. Go to Firefox > Settings > Search > Add Search Engine, and enter: https://noai.duckduckgo.com/search?q=%s
2. Give it a title.
3. Then change your default browser to the new one you created. It’s not perfect, but it’s so nice not getting AI answers / synopses for every search (and seeing less AI-generated images and web results).

@breitensteinart Thanks! Although I think you mean "default search engine", not "default browser".

@breitensteinart It works in any other browser as well. Even Chrome. -
@secretsloth I’m sorry you couldn’t get it to work on your phone, that’s exactly where I set it up the first time for myself (then later on other devices). Did you include the search query modifier at the end of the URL?
Sounds great that the extension you found tries to stop requests entirely!
@breitensteinart yeah, I did, it might be fixed now, but for some reason no matter what I tried, my browser kept telling me it wasn't a search engine. I tried updating, reinstalling firefox, installing from a different source, it was baffling. So I went looking for an extension because I thought, I bet someone has thought of this. Aaaaand they had! Who even knows what other AI queries are being auto generated without our consent these days by advertisers, too.
hopefully it works. -

Yes! And you can also add this to your custom search engine to get suggestions:

Tip for Android users: the IronFox browser already comes with this search engine, so you can save all the configuration

@breitensteinart Doesn't seem to be an option to add a search engine in my desktop Firefox. I was able to dig down into DDG settings and turn off AI (three switches, but all on the same page.)

@breitensteinart I just turned the AI options off which was relatively easy with DDG.

"DuckDuckGo has a No AI version".
Good.
BETTER would be "DuckDuckGo has NO AI version."
But we'll take what we can get.

@breitensteinart @Beltliner403 on my android phone, I only have two options in my phone settings.
I do have all AI settings turned off in vanilla DuckDuckGo, but it would be nice to be sure, by using the noAI version, if I can.

@scy Oops, thanks, corrected!

@bosquebill Weird that you can’t add it. I tried using the settings to turn off AI, but every time I dumped my cookies they would reappear, even if I had an exception for DuckDuckGo’s cookies. I tried using the cloud back up for AI settings, and they still reappeared. Perhaps it was somehow user error, but I just got so annoyed at the lack of consistency and repeatedly having to turn AI off again.

-
@breitensteinart @morgrugyn Why not just use Duck Duck Go?
@johnbloor @morgrugyn Because I get AI suggestions every time I do a search in regular DuckDuckGo. I don’t want to waste natural resources every time I do a search.

Yes! And you can also add this to your custom search engine to get suggestions:
@skylark13 What kind of suggestions? (I tried clicking the link, but it just wants to download it JSON file.)

@skylark13 What kind of suggestions? (I tried clicking the link, but it just wants to download it JSON file.)
Search suggestions is when you start typing in the search / address bar and some suggestions appear without you having to actually go to the search page.
It's not a link you click, if you add a custom search engine for "noai.duckduckgo.com" you would put this in the Suggestions API field. (right-click or long-press and copy to get the whole thing).

@breitensteinart Hmm, https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/settings/save had some information, but in theory if their cookies weren't being cleared it shouldn't have done that.
