I built a small Multicusp DC Ion source :)This is just an air plasma, more gasses to come.

This is just an air plasma, more gasses to come. Next step is to characterize it! I am really looking forward to see how much ion current I can get from it.@gigabecquerel mmm glowy

@PatrickHerd Hah, wait until I have confirmed it actually works!
Just 'cause it glows pretty doesn't mean it's actually any good
There are a few issues right from the start, mainly the magnets being way too weak! I'm also thinking about adding an axial field to focus more ions down the central channel.

@gigabecquerel I'll phone a friend.

@PatrickHerd Not sure if that's a reference I don't get or a saying I'm not familiar with

@gigabecquerel ahh I have a friend making ion sources at that scale professionally, I'll ask what magnets he uses.

@PatrickHerd Ahh, nice

To be honest, I just eyeballed them and vastly overestimated their strength. Just ordered bigger ones and I'll add an iron ring on the outside to guide the field.
I bet he'll also tell you that I need a filament for this configuration, which I know I do, but I'm going for simplicity over anything else really
The way it's set up now it would also be fairly simple to rebuild it as an RF ion source, should I ever want to mess around with RF stuff. -

There's lots of info on bigger sources, but I don't want to put kW of RF into something to get mA of beam, I'm quite happy with something small and 100 uA or so of beam.
From what I gathered a small penning source would be just fine for that, but I like the glow of more "open" sources like this one

@gigabecquerel plastic cover because of high voltage or because of low energy radiation?
@OE1LHU HV, and Implosion hazard.
This doesn't produce much, if any radiation due to the low voltages of < 10 kV
