@skinnylatte I've had folk block me and claim I was a racist (and originally even that I was a white German!) because I pointed out that ethnic minority groups in Britain (one of which I am clearly a member of and its made obvious by my profile and toots over the years!) often have big problems with machismo, patriarchy and theocracy
@vfrmedia @skinnylatte Bigots, idiots, and assholes come in all identities, and bad ideas come from people of every identity. But the white guilt of many nuance-allergic liberal or leftist ideologues produces a soft bigotry of seeing other races as categorically innocent.
Among other things, this reveals that they still see individuals as tokens of the presumptively homogeneous racial categories from which they're sampled. To them, you're either a member of the bad race, or a member of a good race, but in the latter case, you're definitely not a distinct individual, who makes different moral decisions than another person of the same race.
Either you're a Rattler, or you're an Eagle.

It is also an infuriating position to take: that some liberals seem to believe minorities can’t have terrible political opinions all on our own. We must be bamboozled by others. No, most of us come from cultures with our own awful terrible ideas. Some of our cultures even originated those terrible ideas! You don’t own terrible! Is it good for anyone? No. But maybe worry about why your own racist uncles are the way they are and let people deal with their own shit

Misogyny, patriarchy, Roman Catholicism, and Confucian, Hindu, and Muslim influence, too, along with rampant corruption, magical thinking, homo/transphobia, and authoritarian tendencies. Mostly thanks to colonialism, but with little desire to change.

@skinnylatte I remember after the 2024 election there was all this shocked liberal outrage that many Muslim immigrants and Caribbean/LA immigrants and SE Asian immigrants voted for Trump, just all these "leopards eating faces" memes. And this is how Democrats lose, by never asking *why* these groups of immigrants don't see themselves represented by the platform and messaging. Mamdani asking people in the streets was not a gimmick or a gotcha. People aren't stupid. They disagree about stuff.
Often, it's unverified assumptions that get us into trouble whether it's politics or personal relationships.
We're constantly having to relearn how to communicate and to put in the time in order to improve any relationship.

@skinnylatte @emma As someone who works at an Iranian Studies institute (though is actually a Caucasiologist) yes terrible western takes on the region and what its people are allowed or not allowed to thinknor get right or wrong are I think slowly melting my brain into sad gloop over time
