So, I had a bit of a accident over the weekend. My phone slipped out of my hand and landed in a bowl of ranch dressing I was mixing. It landed upright, but now my bottom speaker makes a little rattling noise. I’ve tried every cleaning trick I know, even using isopropyl alcohol wipes, but the rattle just won’t quit. I even downloaded an app that tries to get water out of a phone speaker by playing different sounds and making it vibrate. Still, the rattle is there. It’s not super annoying, but I hear it all the time, and it’s driving me nuts because I can’t fix it. Does anyone have any ideas?

@CoryJackson Hey Cory, try baking the phone before dipping it in ranch dressing. It won't stop the rattle in the speaker, but it might improve the taste.

@CoryJackson have you tried adding more ranch to it? Lol, kidding. Is it waterproof? If so, I'd douse it in water for a few seconds. I've done this with my iPhone a few times when that weird crackle happens and it fixed it.

@CoryJackson I'm sorry to hear of your accident. Unfortunately, what has likely occurred is that some of the ingredience, which originally were liquid, may have dried and hardened, once inside the phone, and are now vibrating against components in the phone, as the speaker vibrates to produce sound. The only remedy that I can imagine, given all that you have already tried, is to bring the phone to an Apple store, and let them know of the situation. They will likely take the phone apart, and physically remove, clean out the speaker module, as well as the void space inside the phone casing where the speaker module lives. Unfortunately, this will likely incur expense, and certainly time without your phone while the work is being done, but it is probably still less inconvenient than having to shell out for a new phone.

@mcourcel It can be in water up to 30 minutes so I actually did give that a try. So far no change

@adam that will more than likely be the case. The good news is the noise is not horrible. The closest Apple store to me is 80 miles away. I will prob stop in next time I am over that way.

@technocounselor @CoryJackson Did you try putting it in a bowl of rice? (You might have, but it's the only thing I know to suggest ATM)

@CoryJackson You don't say whether or not it's under any warranty. Water is a bit different than a creamier more viscus substance. My bet is that's not gonna come out no matter what you can do as an end user.

@CoryJackson I never knew of apps that can do that! Just the water lock on the watch that can play sounds to release water. I'd be interested in these apps, might look into it just in case.

@robini71 @CoryJackson Apple care is a sham anyway. I was told that it would replace a cracked screen. It did, but then you had to pay 100 bucks for labour. Could be different in the states.

@mcourcel @CoryJackson I don't see it that way it's cheaper than paying outright for repairs or a new unit so I would maintain it myself even if I were not on the Apple Upgrade program which includes it in the purchase as a matter of course.

@mcourcel @robini71 @CoryJackson that's a standard deductable. It's in the TNC's. Believe me the part itself plus labor is a loooot more if your out of warranty. I've seen the cost for out of warranty/without apple care. $100 is chump change compared to out of warranty repairs. note, the deductable is the same in the US.
